The Story of Dogfish Head's Continual Hopping: How it Was Invented
- 01/13/2023
Are you a fan of both Electric Football and craft beer? If so, you might be interested in the story of how Dogfish Head Brewing Company's signature continual hopping technique was born with the help of an old school vibrating football game.
In the mid-90s, Dogfish Head began experimenting with super hoppy IPAs, using excessive amounts of hops to create intense bitterness. But it wasn't until founder and CEO Sam Calagione had an "aha!" moment while watching a cooking show that the continual hopping technique was born. He tracked down an old school vibrating Electric Football game and rigged it up to feed a continual stream of hop pellets into the beer throughout the entire boil.
Now, decades later, Dogfish Head's continual hopping process has evolved, but the theory and execution remain essentially unchanged. And the process has not gone unnoticed - the original boil kettle and Electric Football hopping device are now permanent parts of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's "American Brewing History Initiative" exhibit. If you're interested in learning more about the history and science behind the process, check out this video produced by Dogfish Head.
In the video, you'll hear from Sam Calagione himself as he explains the process in detail and gives a behind-the-scenes look at how Dogfish Head's hop-forward beers are made. As an added bonus, the video also showcases the basis behind the exciting partnership between Tudor Games and Dogfish Head.
So, whether you're a beer enthusiast, Electric Football fanatic, or just curious about the continual hopping process, be sure to check out the video and learn more about the fascinating story behind one of Dogfish Head's most unique brewing techniques.
